10 Best San Francisco Photo Locations

After a decade photographing engagements and families across San Francisco, these are the spots I return to most. Each one has a different mood — choose based on the light you want, how much you want to walk, and what feels like you.

Below: when each location looks best, what to wear, and whether it's better suited to an engagement session or a family shoot.

01

Palace of Fine Arts

Romanesque rotunda, swan-filled lagoon, and golden-hour columns make this the most iconic SF backdrop for engagements and family portraits.

Best time
Golden hour, about an hour before sunset — the colonnade glows amber and crowds thin out.
What to wear
Flowing dresses, neutral linens, and earth tones complement the warm stone. Avoid bright neons that fight the architecture.

Engagement

02

Legion of Honor

European-style courtyard, Rodin's Thinker, and sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the bluff just outside the museum.

Best time
Early morning weekdays — soft east light on the courtyard and almost no foot traffic before 10 AM.
What to wear
Classic, formal palettes: ivory, charcoal, deep green. The setting is timeless, so dress to match.

03

Sutro Baths & Lands End

Ruined seawater pools, dramatic cliffs, and Pacific surf — a moody, cinematic location loved by couples who want something less polished.

Best time
Sunset on a clear evening for ocean light, or a fogged-in morning for soft, romantic atmosphere.
What to wear
Layers you can move in — wind is real here. Muted blues, greys, and rust read beautifully against the stone and sea.

04

Baker Beach

The classic full-on view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the sand — wide, open, and forgiving for families with kids who need to roam.

Best time
About 90 minutes before sunset, when the bridge catches warm side light and the beach softens.
What to wear
Barefoot-friendly, breezy fabrics in cream, sand, and dusty blue. Skip long trains — sand is unforgiving.

Family

05

Crissy Field & the Presidio

Grassy promenade, sailboats, and the bridge in the background — a relaxed, walkable spot perfect for family sessions with young children.

Best time
Morning light when fog burns off, or sunset for warm tones across the grass and water.
What to wear
Casual coordinated palettes — denim, cream, soft pastels. Bring layers; the wind off the bay is no joke.

06

Conservatory of Flowers (Golden Gate Park)

White Victorian glasshouse and flower-lined lawn in Golden Gate Park — bright, romantic, and beautifully framed year-round.

Best time
Late morning for even, soft light on the white facade — direct midday sun blows out the building.
What to wear
Garden-party tones: blush, sage, soft yellow. Florals work here when nowhere else.

Engagement · Family

07

Japanese Tea Garden

Bonsai, pagodas, koi ponds, and a vermillion drum bridge — intimate, photogenic, and perfect for smaller groups.

Best time
Right at opening (9 AM) on a weekday — the garden is quiet and dappled light is gorgeous.
What to wear
Soft neutrals and muted reds pull the bridge color forward. Avoid loud prints that compete with the foliage.

Family

08

Alamo Square & the Painted Ladies

The most recognizable San Francisco skyline view — Victorian rooftops, downtown skyline, and a grassy hill for the family to spread out on.

Best time
Just after sunrise for soft light on the houses, or sunset when the skyline catches color.
What to wear
Bright, joyful tones — the houses are pastel, so play with them rather than against. Layered looks photograph well.

Engagement

09

Twin Peaks & Tank Hill

The 360° city panorama — downtown, the bay, the bridges. Best for couples who want the whole city as their backdrop.

Best time
Sunset to blue hour. Arrive 45 minutes early for parking and to scout the angle.
What to wear
Bold, structured looks — long coats, slim silhouettes — read well against the wide horizon. Bring something warm.

Engagement · Family

10

Mission District Murals

Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley — vivid murals and gritty urban texture for couples and families who want color and personality.

Best time
Late morning when the alleys are lit but shadows are soft. Avoid weekend afternoons (crowds).
What to wear
Solid colors that don't clash with the murals — denim, white, black, deep jewel tones. Let the walls bring the color.
